The 2011 DUC Shootout Photographic Competition, took place from 1st Feb to 2nd of May 2011. The theme for the contest was “why dive Durban” with stills and video shooters being tasked with displaying this. The 2011 DUC Shootout was targeted at the Novice photographer, with the sole aim of getting more photographers and videographers to compete in competitions. The competition followed the same generic rules and categories as other contests with the main exception being Novice WITH and a Novice WITHOUT strobe categories. The “Durban dive sites only” rule put allot of the Pro’s shooters off the competition. This was disappointing, as Durban has a vast amount of wrecks, reefs and interesting fauna for experienced video and still photographers to work with. The prize giving took place on the 10th of May at the DUC club house on the beach. The kitchen and bar were open providing the entrants and their friends and families with dinner and drinks before the event kicked off.A unique aspect of the prize giving was that the winners and runner ups received feedback from the judges as the images were displayed – this really was invaluable to all that attended as well as the entrants.Overall, the stills images were not of high quality. However, out of all the prize winners, it was interesting to note that 80% of the entrants had never entered a photographic contest – nor won prizes for their efforts.[ CLICK HERE TO VIEW WINNING IMAGES ] However, the video section produced some amazing footage of the Durban wrecks and reefs which proved to be the highlight of the prize giving. The prizes in total exceeded R60,000 in value. A Custom video housing, diving gear, torches and accommodation and dive a ways in Sodwana and Ponta were all presented to the very excited winners. We look forward to making this an annual event and the intention is to grow the competition in stature – what this space for 2012 shootout!
